Germany lost the First World War while Alois Pokora, a lieutenant in the 6th Battalion of the Schleswig Pioneers, was lying unconscious in a Berlin hospital. When he regained consciousness, he realized that the old world had irrevocably disappeared and was replaced by a completely new one in which he, Alois, had yet to find a place. He had always been lonely and despised, forced to prove his worth all the time. But now, with four years of combat experience, in the new revolutionary reality, he will become a valuable asset for the Spartacists, the Freikorps, and the Poles building an independent state. But does Alois himself want to join anyone? Perhaps his only goal is to be with his dreamed-of Agnes?
Szczepan Twardoh offers the reader a sophisticated intellectual game, inviting him into a time and space where Wasserpolish sounds simultaneously with German, and the protagonist is forced to search for himself in this mishmash of languages, cultures, social restrictions, and expectations.
