Germany lost the First World War while Alois Pokora, a lieutenant in the 6th Battalion of the Schleswig Pioneers, was lying unconscious in a Berlin hospital. When he regained consciousness, he realized that the old world had irrevocably disappeared and was replaced by a completely new one in which he, Alois, had yet to find a place.
